From 21st to 26th of July the Velá de Santiago and Santa Ana will be celebrated in Triana.
The open-air dance is declared of Tourist Interest in Andalusia and this year it has become a Major Festival after the vote in the plenary session of the City Council. In this way, the Velá begins to be managed by the Delegation of Major Festivals and not the district as up to now.
The ‘Velá’ begins with the announcement in the old Hotel Triana, (this year the herald will be the ex-bullfighter and businessman Francisco Rivera) and ends with fireworks that illuminate all Triana district and the Guadalquivir River.
During these days the Triana’s bridge, the Altozano and the adjacent streets are filled with lighting and lanterns. At Betis Street stalls are placed whose access is free and open, and in the Plaza del Altozano a stage is set in which every night there are performances.
During mornings, religious events, competitions and sports activities, exhibitions, contests, gymkhanas and screenings of movies in Santa Ana Square are organized.
Afternoons are carried out in the river with the traditional ‘Cucaña’, which consists of a boat placed in the river and that leaves a long mast, greased fat with a flag at the end, all contestants have to cross this mast to reach the flag. Anyone who gets it gets a prize.
