The church of Santa Catalina reopens its doors

The church of Santa Catalina reopens its doors next Sunday, November 25 after remaining closed for more than 14 years to the public.

The acts will begin on Saturday, November 24, when the images will be moved: Our Lady of Carmen, Our Lady of the Rosary, Saint Lucia and the Exaltation Corporation, as well as the parish cross from the church of San Román. They will do it in staggered period, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

On Sunday morning, at 10.30 am, the Musical Group Our Father Jesus of Health will announce the inauguration of the Church. It will be then when the archbishop of Seville, Juan José Asenjo, consecrates the altar of this temple with the intervention of the Polyphonic Coral of Isla Cristina and the Polyphonic Coral of Tomares, under the direction of Virginia Peña and Vicente Sanchís.

History and restoration.

The Gothic-Mudejar church of Santa Catalina of Sevilla was built after the reconquest of Seville by King San Fernando in 1248 and declared a national monument in 1912 and Cultural Interest Property (BIC) in 1985.

It was on May 29, 2004 when Antonio Hiraldo, the then parish priest of the church, detected damages in the structure of the building and communicated it to the Archdiocese that immediately ordered its closure.

The altarpieces were protected, the church was braced and a provisional roof was placed. Once insured, it underwent an examination that ruled out serious structural damage. From there, restoration work began but was interrupted several times.

The renovated temple will have a visitable crypt that contains remains of the Roman era, a Visigothic cemetery, a kind of Islamic period oratory, the first Mudejar church of 1248 and how it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1390.

In addition, it has recovered the representation of Saint Peter in the northwest atrium and vestiges of figurative decoration in the dressing room. The Mudejar entrance door has been completely restored and all baroque and neoclassical altarpieces have been cleaned.

The completion of works will not be effective until the perimeter channel that will protect the centenary walls of the temple against the danger of humidity is closed and the 10 or 12 meter section of the outside ventilation chamber in the narrowest stretch of Alhóndiga Street is built.
