Next Saturday September 29 will open to the public the vaulted basement in which the Palace of King Don Pedro I was cemented in the fourteenth century.
New treasure in the Palacio del Alcázar
It is a 280 square meter chamber formed by a central room with four Mudejar vaults and the rest with two vaults. It is also at the same level as the natural layout of the Guadalquivir river, in order to isolate the palace from possible humidity.
Within this semi-basement there are some pieces from the archaeological excavations of the Alcázar in recent years and other ancient ones that were in the palace or in the Archaeological Museum. The majority are pieces of marble and ceramics, since these materials have greater power of resistance to the conditions of the space.
On Saturday September 29 there will be two groups (previous appointment through the web) that may contemplate for the first time said space through the guided tours offered by the Alcázar on the occasion of Tourism Day, although a few days later you can see all the that visit the palace.
History
Initially, it was used as a warehouse and warehouse, although little by little it fell into disuse and abandonment. When the Lorenzo de Oviedo gallery was built, the architect took advantage of that abandoned basement to communicate the royal palace with the gardens. Then he created a leisure space where the narrow lateral vents became large windows with access to the gardens.
Currently, in the visit to the basement you can see one of the original vents next to the rest that were transformed, in which have been placed folding windows so that the public can enter and leave from the garden.
